I am currently looking at a used Montauk which
is powered by a 60 hp Mariner. Is a 60 enough
for this boat? Any comments.

I would say No, on a 17' Boat. At least a 90 HP would be prefered. What is the Maximum Rated HP of the Boat? You would want to get as near to this as possible!

60hp is not too bad for a montauk -- as JB likes to remind people, they are light and fast -- only 900lbs for the hull I believe.

Howdy Eye Tooth.

Back in the '70s Whaler used to deliver Montauks with Bearcat 55s (rated at the flywheel). As I recall they were not rockets but planed easily and cruised at around 24mph.

Go to www.continuouswave.com search the forums for discussions on power for Montauks. There are a couple of books worth there from Montauk owners. Many Montauks are powered by 50 and 60hp engines.

I have a 70hp Suzuki 4 stroke on my Montauk and am very pleased with the performance. I get WOT 38.5mph (GPS) at 5800rpm and cruise at 30mph at around 4500rpm.

I think 60 is adequate for a Montauk unless you are speed obsessed. Then you will want 90 to 100hp and you will have a rocket.

Good luck. :)

My Eye Tooth,

I agree with JB. The Montauk (newer) are rated for 100. I think that's excessive.

My dad's Montauk has a 70 Johnson (2-stroke) and it is MORE than adequate. The holeshot is great and the top speed is about the same as what JB is getting.

I have driven one with a 90 Evinrude and I thought it was overpowered.

You can't beat the boat. I've had a '74 model since 1982 and it's still in great shape. I believe the max power it's rated for is 100. I've had two motors on it since I bought it, both 90's and the boat's more than adequately powered. If you're planning on skiing, the 60 is probably a little small but for fishing and running around it should be adequate. Good luck, you can't beat that hull!
