Power head oil leak

Ok so I have a 1964 starflight 90hp power head with a 1959 fat50 lower end.
My issue is oil leaking from my power head into the lower unit. I assume this is due to a bad o-ring on the powerhead.

But it seems to be leaking around my water intake, would this indicate a bad seal in the lower unit?

Looks like I burned fuel/oil mix. Common to 2-strokes. More so on those old V4s. Perfectly normal...

Yes especially running on higher oil mixes, i suppose you are running it on more than 50/1. Gearoil can turn black from very extended use but you can normally smell if its that and i highly doubt it on yours

Ok, so this is normal where it is coming out at? Good to know. And yes, it has a gas/oil smell to it. Defiantly not gear oil.

Cant say if its a normal spot for it to be coming out of that engine as ive never owned that model, on mine it normally drips out by the prop, nothing to suggest it is coming out of a place that should cause concern.

You can see why many lakes and places now ban two strokes.

Seems odd that it is so nasty black. Oil coming from the powerhead is clear, unless it is mixed with exhaust crud, which would turn it black. But then the question becomes how is it getting into the cooling system to that extent? If I remember correctly, the 90 doesn't have puddle drains. Where are you running this thing? In a tank? That would explain a lot.

Oil mixture I'm not sure on as it's what was in the gas tank when I got the boat. Has me wondering if the prev owner just threw used oil in it. Going to empty the tank and put in fresh gas & oil @ a 50/1 see if it spits less oil out and lighter in color.

Only running it in a lake, no tanks, barrels or muffs

Well, then all that black crap coming out there is kind of unusual. Since you have a 90 on a 50, I don't have a ready answer.

EDIT: On closer look, it doesn't look like it is coming out the water inlet. Is there a drain hole behind all that ooze?

After cleaning some of the oil off, there is indeed a very small hole next to the oil screw.
Seems to be coming from that hole as well as it appeared to leak out around the oval plate for the water inlet.

Ok, so I got fresh gas oil mix @ 50/1 and seems to ooz out big time still. Just to play it safe think I'll replace seals anyways.
Thanks for all the responses!
