trying to remove the PH on my 1988 90hp yamaha. i have followed the repair manual to disconnect everything and removed the 11 bolts that it says holds the PH on. but i cannot get it to break loose. the book says you may need to use a wooden pry bar to break the seal. tried that and broke a bunch of wood. any ideas? could i be missing something?

Re: power head removal

When is the last time the lower unit was off? The driveshaft may be stuck in the splines inside the crankshaft. I find it easier to drop the lower unit when pulling a powerhead. One less thing to line up and one less thing to worry about holding the powerhead on.

I had a similar problem. Are you using a forklift or a cherry picker? because the PH has to come straight up off the shaft. If it is cocked or you have any side pressure it wont come off. Also check again for a bolt under the oil tank area it was hard to find.
Hope this helps.
