power loss

When I place my 5.5 johnson in gear the rpm drop is very pronounced. When it is not in gear the engine revs much higher and runs very smooth. It even runs good when in gear. Will to great a prop pitch cause this problem?

5.5 Isn't a ton of horsepower so depending on the size of boat you're pushing I would think it would definitely drop significantly when put under a load, either way- it's grabbing alot more water than it maybe should. Could be an issue of pitch or overall diameter of your wheel.......Is it just a kicker motor or your main power?

Ayuh,... Sounds kinda normal, or atleast nothing a Tune Up won't cure...
