How does one diagnose a power pack problem in a 1981 Evinrude 15 hp? The engine will start cold and run fine but once it gets warmed up it doesn’t want to go wide open throttle and if I shut it off it won’t re-start for 15-20 minutes until it cools down. I’m using fresh fuel, new plugs, re-built carb, new fuel lines inside the engine and from the tank and a new bulb and vent cap. I’ve chased this problem all over the place and now I’m wondering about the power pack. I thought I’d ask before I laid down $75 for another part. Thanks

Never say never, but I sort of doubt it is the power pack, but possible, I suppose. Does it have spark when it won't start?

I don’t know, I haven’t checked that out yet. I’ve tried all the usual suspects and can’t get the problem solved. Is it possible it’s flooding out?

I'm having similar problems with a similar age 9.9 right now. I've taken off the flywheel and all looks good under there. I use a probe light with battery and usually if the Power Pack is bad by probing the prongs one or more will not light, I have tried the CDI companies website which is all Greek to me. This time I'm stumped as all the connections light. I know that the amount of current through the system determines how strong a spark will be generated and/or if the spark is intermittent. Kill button works as it lights the wire to the system to make a ground. Your problem sounds electric in nature to me. My experience is that if the fuel system works it works or not from the get go. But your fuel bowl could be getting filled and then run dry depending on how long it ran. Fuel pump could be bad.

I pulled the power pack plugs apart and gave them a light brushing, them connected and disconnected them a few times. It took 4-6 pulls but re-started with the engine hot. I didn’t get a chance to rev it up too much in the barrel. Maybe it was just a corroded connection.
