I have a 1984 8hp Johnson (J8RCRM) with a bad power pack. My buddy has a working power pack off of a 1984 6hp johnson. Appearently his power pack (p/n 582453) is used on most OMC 4-35hp motors from '77-'84...however my '84 8hp uses p/n 582864 so it is one of the odd-balls. All of the connections as well as the coils are all the same but from what i gather the 582864 has a 5800 rpm limiter. A new OEM power pack for my motor is $100+ and he is willing to give me his used one so just wondering if there was any way to make his work for my motor...i dont want to burn my motor up obviouslly but if it can be used or modified some how, that would get me on the water...anythoughts?

Re: power pack swap/compatibility

thanks for the info...just puzzling to me why the '84 8hp's use the 582864's yet the '84 4,4.5, 6, 9.9,15's (and many other small 2 cylinders of the same era) use the 582453 (583380, 582452). what is so differet about the 8hp that requires it to have this different pack?
