Power Pack

I brought the boat to the shop and the technician found a bad stator. He did test the power pack and said it checked out good. He went on to tell me that he has seen the power pack fail not long after the stator fails. Is it possible that the power pack can make it through the bad stator or should I change the power pack also? Also, what about the rectifier?

Thanks

Re: Power Pack

Personally I wouldn't be replacing the power pack especially considering it's cost. Even if 9 out of 10 failed afeter a stator failure. Unless of course I had a trip planned to the Congo where there ain't no parts. Same goes for the rectifier. Keep you cash in your pocket as long as you can. I'll be watching this post to see how the real experts weigh in.

Re: Power Pack

The only condition that I can think of that would cause another component to fail is over voltage. Sometimes though it doesn't cause immediate failure it can stress a part and result in a latent failure. I'm not a stator expert so I don't know if over voltage is a common failure. Same thing goes for the rectifier.

Re: Power Pack

Just in case it matters you should post the year and model of your engine.

Its a 1996 Johnson 175 Oceanpro. I agree with you guys on buying parts thst I do not need. I just hate thinking there is a possibility of breaking down on a fishing trip. I also hate to try and explain needing more parts to my wife (LOL).

I would'nt put un-needed electronic part's in this engine, nor the wife's car.

Re: Power Pack

I should get the boat back Friday. I plan to launch it in the river to give it a test this weekend (weather permitting). Another quuestion I have is about the battery switch. I have 2 batteries and a switch that reads 1, all, and 2. I have been running the switch on all, but the mechanic told me to run it on one or two, never both. Just curious if this had anything to do with my problem.

Thanks

Re: Power Pack

Are you just reading the voltage of the batteries or are you actually charging them both when you have it set on both? My question would be is your engine's charging capacity able to charge two batties at one time? I'd rather doubt it. I know in a car, the alternator can go bad if too much load is put on it. I don't know if this is the same thing?
I am sure there are several on this forum who do know the exact answer to your question. If you don't get a satifactory response here you might start a new thread with that being the topic.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful or you could just follow his instruction.

Re: Power Pack

The charge output should be able to charge two batteries at the same time. If it puts out 35 amps they will just charge slower with two.

Moreso the problem is that each battery will have a different fully charged level. The problem is that if you have both batteries charging the one with the lower level will charge and possibly overcharge and the other will never charge fully.

Thats why you should not run on "both". I choose battery 1 for the trip out and the other for the trip back. For short trips I've been known to leeave it on both :)

You can also purchase a charge regulator that will charge both batteries at the same time. Around $150.00 I think.
