Have some fluid from my powersteering pump in bilge area on my 92 Mercuiser Alpha I Gen II. Appears to be coming out of the vent hole on the cap. I checked the levels and all apears to be ok. Could it have been overfilled? Fluid in bilge area does not appear milky either. I have only run the boat a few times since owning it.

Steve, Do you mean fluid from the trim/tilt pump? Normally fluid doesn't overflow from the engine-mounted powersteering pump, unless it is overfilled.

I checked the trim pump already but I will check it again. I doesn't seem like the pump cap is sealed tightly. Looks like fluid overfowing from the steering pump resevoir. With the engine at operating temp I opened to check the dipstick and noticed that the resevoir was full up to the neck.

Steve,

I just went through this same problem. Fill the PS resevoir with fluid and see if it leaks out w/o running the engine. I filled mine one afternoon, then went back the next morning and my resevoir was empty. I ended up needing a new pump.

Also check all of the hose clamps going to and from the pump.

Its still full thats what confuses me. When I get home I am gonna check to see where it is coming from exactly. It looked like the cap. I am wondering if I have to replace the cap? I will check all the hoses today.

Checked all hoses and they are good.....Tightened the belt which seemed to be rather sloppy. Inspected all areas and all indications seem to point that the pump was overfull. Checked the dipstick and it is about 1/4" over the line for cold reading. I am not sure if the boat is level but if it is and it is still high then I think I have found my problem
