Power steering Squeal

Maybe someone can give me a little direction on solving a annoying noise and maybe a problem:

Power steering (1990 vintage) makes quite a squeal, especially when turned hard to port, but at other times as well. Would seem to be belt noise, and I have checked the belt tension and condition, which are fine. Also checked the power steering fluid, and its clean and full. Could it be a misalignment of the pulleys? How do I check alignment? Or maybe something else?

Have you tried belt dressing? If that takes care of it then its time for new belts...If not, could be alignment...Pete

Check the belt tension right after shutting down the motor. The belt needs to be real tight all the time.Replace the belt, it may be riding inside the pulley.

Thanks for the suggestions--I tried the belt dressing and that helped marginally. Try the belt next. Thanks again

Re: Power steering Squeal

Problem resolved--although the belt squeal manifested itself only when the power steering was used, the problem turned out to be the atlernator belt--extra load on the shared drive shaft caused the alternator belt to slip. Things aren't always as they seem......Thanks all!
