I replaced the power steering pump on a 5.7l Volvo penta beacause it was whining. After about 25 yards in the water I hear a loud squealing noise. Checked the tension on the belts and they are fine. The belts are new.

I took it to a mechanic who is telling me the problem is the shutte valve is stuck on the steering actuator. Which is cause to loose pressure and causing the squeeling.

Does this make sense or is or is the mechanic blowing smoke? He is also telling me he will have to pull the motor to change the actuator?

Did you check the oil level, in the powersteering pump?

Yep, it is still full. I let the engine run for about 30 minutes before taking it to the water and never had a problem. Took it out to the water and then the squeling started after about 15 -20 yards underway.
