Power Tilt And Trim Doing Crazy Things! What could it be.

Past 2 times Ive been in the water my power tilt and trim will just start to raise on its on while we are fishing. It will go up than stop and about 20 seconds later it will do it again and again until it finally goes up as high as it can go.It only does it while it is in the water. Also I have had it not work 3 or 4 of times and I had to barely peck on the power tilt and trim motor and it will start working again but that has happened while in and out of the water.

I had a similar thing on a mercury once turned out to be the switch on the controller might be worth checking as it was a cheap and quick fix.

Same exact thing on a buddy's boat -- it was a Mariner though. Controller switch was super sensitive -- you could almost LOOK at the switch, and it would go up. Even wind would make the trim lift.


.Up/Down switch on the controller needed to be replaced.

Do you have a switch on the side of the O/B? If so try disconecting it and see if it makes a difference.

I also had a wire in the throttle handle that was shorting out as throttle was applied, only when pushed about 2/3 throttle or more, so it never did it on land while flushing. Figured it out cause I had to mess with the binnacle one day. Might check the trim switch and its wiring down through the binnacle.

I think we figured out what was causing this and you guys were right. The previous owner had a toggle switch installed at the engine for the power tilt and trim and when we were coming to a stop water would rush up from behind and get it wet on the inside causing it to act up. Thanks everybody for your tips. I believe the problem is resolved.
