Still very new to boating. Have 74 mercury 1500 and i am having problems with the tilt and trim. the boat was sitting for years and when i brought it home it went up and down. then i put it all the way up and i couldnt get it back down. i filled it up with oil and i was wondering if there was a bleeder valve on it somewhere i looked but couldnt find one. i know it doesnt leek because the motor doesnt move. it holds where its suppose too. if i disconnect on side of the lower hose then it goes down. then i can raise it up a little and lower it a little but ounce it gets to a certain height it will raise, but not lower. any thing will help thanks.

There is a control valve (reverse lock) located on the front of the pump/valve body. Make sure that knob is turned fully CCW then try the down operation again.

yeah i have screw it in and tried it and screwed it out and tried it several times. i was thinking maybe that is broke or something. It doesnt make sense to me. the pump even kick on is just doesnt move. It is like that lock switch is stuck or something. Do these things fail. If so probably need a new pump huh?:

Make sure the transom bracket is not binding. There are two dog-eared shaped pieces of steel that are the manual locks. They sometimes jam the motor in the up position.

Did you fill the reservoir with the motor fully UP?

Can you hear the pump motor running when you press the down button?

Re: power tilt and trim

i filled it with the engine up and topped it off again while it was down because i have to loosen one hose on the right side and it will go down. Yes when i press the trim button down i can hear the motor run most of the time. After awhile though it get warm and just clicks. Also sometimes i have to go up in order to go down, but like i stated ounce i get so far up it wont go down no matter what, unless i loosen that hose. Does any one have the same pump? Its on a 74 checkmate with a inline 6 150 hp. was wondering the exact wires from the trim button that goes in front of the pump. I have a brown wire at the top, red wire on the left and white wire on the right. Dont know if you can switch the wires around someone has messed with it at one time because the plugs arnt there anymore. i had to put wire male wire connectors on them and plug them in that way. Also the wires get hot to. I dont know anything about boats so im trying to figure them out. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: power tilt and trim

Jman, The original PTT wiring had a trim limit switch, which complicated the trim vs tilt function. I would recommend bypassing it . I recommend that three wires from the PTT pump be run directly to the PTT switch panel. Run blue(up) to the middle button, green(down) to the bottom button and red(power) is common to both buttons.

chris, thanks the switch panel your talking about is on the dash correct? If so thats already been done. Those switches dont work any way. The switches i use is a red button on the throttle and a remote switch for when your not in the boat i guess is what there for. But should i just try running new wire from the throttle back to the pump? I am pretty sure it only has the tilt i guess it would be. It only raises and lowers the motor. Of course i really dont know the difference so i may be wrong. Thanks for the response and any future ones!
