Has anyone had any experance buying a used pt/pt unit and installing it on a motor that is not equiped with t/t. I want to install a power unit on on a 1978 Merc 70.

I know you can buy new unit for $500-600. That's too much to invest in this motor.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Power tilt/trim installation

Going through the same thing right now with my '73 850. It did have power tilt, but the old style that's hard to find parts for (not integral). I just snagged an entire unit (tilt/trim, steering and transom mount) off ebay for 200.00 (from an '84 70hp). Should be here within the next couple days. The motor mount locations should be the same for your engine also (I believe it's the same for all 50-115hps). I got the guy to take the measurement of the mounting locations prior to purchasing it, and they matched up with mine. Just make sure you find a mounting system that fits your shaft. Mine had the 25" shaft, but there was also a 20" shaft version, which would not fit my engine. The only other thing I have to do it buy the 2 solenoids for the switches and run the wiring. Hope this helps.

Re: Power tilt/trim installation

I am getting ready to do just that. My application is an 81' merc 80hp and the donor PTT is off the same vintage. It is the older style remote style PTT motor with twin hydraulic cylinders and four hoses. Staying with the same vintage parts had an appeal to me, I also could not find anyone firm info on using any of the newer style PTT's for retrofit. Many guy's just stated it was not economical feasable. Hell, I could say that about every single thing I do...if you wanted to boil it down to economic logic.

I', not sure, but I think the 50hp is a smaller CID than the 65/75/80/85, so not sure that the 50 block will fit the mid tower of the 65-150 inlines. I know the 75/80/85/90/115/140/150 used the same mid tower so the blocks bolts do line up and it's easy to add the integrated power trim. I've done it. Check to see if the 50 has the same bolt pattern before trying.

Re: Power tilt/trim installation

Yeh I did that with my '71 Merc 800 two years ago. I picked up a complete motor with PTT for $200. Motor did not run and I use it as a parts motor, but the PTT system works perfectly.

Installation is straight forward. Check the condition of the hoses. If they are original they will probably need to be replaced and they are not cheap. I found a NIB complete set of 4 hoses for $100, about 1/2 price.

If you buy just the PTT system, you may end up having to buy/make some additional hardware. Make sure you get the control panel and cable harness with the system.

Re: Power tilt/trim installation

Thanks for all of the replies. I found a used unit but he wants $300 for it. This 70 hp motor has two cylinders on it. From what I have seen the larger HP motors only have one large cylinder. That cuts done on my options. I'm watching Craigs List for a non running motor to get a T/T off of but no luck so far. I will keep you updated..

Thanks for the help.

Those "Type 1" PTT systems (two external cylinders with pump in the boat and 4 hoses) were used on the in-line 4 and 6 cyls up to about 1986. That is what you should be looking for.

Actually, it was 1984 when the second generation power trim came into play for the inline 6's

Re: Power tilt/trim installation

I installed the twin cylinder power/trim/tilt that was thrown in the deal when i bought my 850, it was in a plastic tub in a bunch of pieces soaked in oil, it looked like it was dropped and one of the solenoids was busted but changed that and it worked!

the old hoses were kinked and looked unusable but surprisingly they held fluid, I ran my own switches, one for all the way up (trailor) and another one for motoring in the water that has the safety limit feature.

It has a slow leak down that i will fix later, if you located one for $300.00 hook up some power and make sure the motor works, offer him $250.00? thats about the going price over here, this unit is a real backsaver and well worth it.
