Hi guys , on my 87 225 Johnson I've been having some issues with the power trim the motor sounds good and it goes up just fine. But if I have the motor all the way up and lower the trim the motor just stays up then I have to back and push the motor and it will fall back onto the rod and once it's about 1/2 way down it will move on its own but it starts bouncing till it hits the slow speed rods.
Anybody have any idea what can be causing this? And no the trim rods are not rusted out.

Thanks In advance.

It could be the bushings in the swivel bracket or the bushing in the upper tilt ram are corroeded and swelled up or lacking lube causing it to bind going down.

Is there a place to grease the swivel bracket? I did not notice a grease nipple when I looked at it but I was in a hurry so I just glanced at it. Is there a way to bleed the old fluid out of the reservoir?

There are two grease fittings on the transom bracket mount right in the front where the tilt tube goes through.

Alright I'll lube thouse up and see if it helps. Also can I just use ATF dextron 3 fluid for the trim pump?

Bleed the PTT unit. Run it up, remove the plug, and let her sit. Now refill, replace plug, run her down and then up, and let her sit 5 min. Refill and repeat until she moves smoothly. I believe Dextron ATF is fine to use.

I'll give that a try this weekend thanks. If there is another type of oil in the reservoir is it safe to add the ATF then attemptemt to bleed the old stuff out. Or should I figure out what type of oil that is in there and use the same type?

As long as the ATF is Dextron II it should be okay.
