Power Trim and Loud Squeal when turning, running for a while

I have a 2-part issue for my 1990 Volvo 570A (GM 35) DP-A

1 - Power Trim: Since I bought the boat, power trim was dead. I studied the wiring diagram but can't seem to tell how to run a test 12V to go up and down. Is there a magic wire to hit with +12V on the motor to trigger it if I disconnect all the relays? I'm not sure if it's prestolite or oildyne. I figured if I could bypass the relays, I can run a 12V one direction or the other just to see if the tilt motor works or not. My tilt guage says 62, reverse sputters a bit, red light flashing, so I figure I better get this fixed ASAP instead of running in "beach" mode. Any thoughts how to test the pump directly? if it works with 12V, I can go trace the rest of the wires.

2 - Somewhat related; after spring wake up; running the boat fine for hours; there was a slight squeal/squeak occassionally on light turns (or adjustments). I took a quick look at power steering belt, alternator belt, all else was working fine. A slight correction of steering wheel made the noise go away. Later in the day the squeak got worse and would only go away with a big change in turning, or bump the throttle down a bit. I opened the engine hatch and it was loud like a piston with no oil scratching the block. Funny thing is you could give it a touch more throttle or less and the noise went away. I was searching up and found possible issue with gimbal (does not seem to have a grease fitting like the mercs), PDS bearings (but looks like this drive might not have one), or possible bearing going out in the steering pump or circulating pump. I'm going to remove some belts and see if turning by hand gives me any clues. Running at idle or in neutral was fine, and 90% of the time running under load or every 3/4 throttle was fine; just figure I need to track it down before something goes BOOM when a bearing freezes. Somewhat along these lines, maybe we are actually running the drive trimmed up; but it looks OK from the dock, and hopefully if we can fix #1 here, we'll be able to trim up or down and see what happens. I'll also replace the belts and see what happens.

Any expert thoughts?

I don't think the boat has been out of water for 5+ years; cooling is fine runs great except the new squeally issue; sounds a bit louder than a car with a bad belt; but can go on for a 60 seconds if not throttled down.

Thanks in advance, this place is great!

this is a new to you boat, so do all the maintenance

new belts, new plugs, new wires, new cap and rotor, raw water impeller, drive maintenance, bellows, u-joint inspection, PDS shaft lube, etc. and yes, your PDS shaft should have a grease nipple, although there was one or two years without. if not, read up on where to drill to add it or read up on how to replace PDS shaft bearings and add the nipple then

regarding your trim, should be an oildyne 108

one of the most simple schematics in the world. however make sure that the little circuit breaker at the starter isnt broken (common issue)

manual is located here http://boatinfo.no/lib/volvo/manuals/aq280-dpc_drive.html (page 167 for the schematic)

the motor only has two leads. direct power (50 amps) in one direction and the motor runs one way direct power in the other direction it runs the other way

something is wrong with your trim sender setting to read 62 degrees as you should have hit the transom shield bumper at 48 degrees and most you should get down is -8 read the manual as to how to set.

Never run the motor with the drive up, you will tear out the u-joints and stress the crap out of the PDS bearings

regarding the power steering. put on a new belt verify you have oil in the pump and the belt tension is correct.

Thank you Mr Danforth!!! I've looked at a few schematics this one is the best so far.

Which is the zerk for the PDS bearings? I see a zerk on the top of the volvo housing inside the boat for steering, one on the side for maybe leveling, but can't find one on the bell housing or near by there. This manual and others don't mention a PDS bearing, but only a double bearing which seems to be the same thing or something in the drive.

I think I can attack the tilt pump now; I'll disconnect the pump and try the 12V. If pump works I'll check the starter fuse and other fuse at the helm.

I've had the boat for a year, stored on the water here in San Diego. Since the trim indicated off, but the boat ran great I never bothered to do the maintenance on the outside. Inside I did new carb, plugs, wires, rotor, coil, filters, etc. The bottom cleaner guy says the drive is down and secured; it LOOKS down, but in reverse there is ventilation in the props, so most likely it's not locked in. Once we make sure the drive is up or down, I'll try to adjust the sender.

I'm going to remove belts and see if I might have a squeaky circulation pump or power steering pump, try to grease whatever zerks I can find; and I'll let you all know if I find the answers.

Thanks again, good info to get me going!
