Power trim and Tilt

Yesterday the trim and tilt was slow and I just thought it was because it was cold. Today the trim and tilt doesn't work at all. It is a 1986 225hp Johnson. To add a little more info the batteries are good and i checked the wires and connections. The motor is getting power and when I use the switch there is just a clicking sound from what I believe to be a solenoid on the port side of the engine itself in general area of the wire harness. I really dont know where to start any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Power trim and Tilt

The clicking you are hearing is coming from the trim/tilt relay(s). It sounds like one of the relay contacts has gone bad. Not an uncommon problem. You can verify this if you have a multi-meter, check the resistance of the contact(s).
The relays are fairly inexpensive.

When checking the resistance is that of the relay? Do I want to disconnect the relay and then check resistance or leave it connected and then at what points do I test? Also what ohms am I looking for?

Re: Power trim and Tilt

I had this very same problem and discovered today that the relays will not function properly unless they have 12v of power. If you hca determine that the relays are receiving 12v, then I suggest that you tap the Trim motor with a hammer while you try raising or lowering the engine.

Today I discovered that my trim motor works, but only after I have tapped it with a hammer. I believe this may mean the motor has internal damage. I plan to post a message that requests assistance in resplving this problem.
