So I came across a motor on craigslist. 85 hp merc with TT for $300. The guy says that the trim cylinders leak a little. can they be re-sealed or is the more likely that they are un-repairable?

Re: Power Trim Find

Repair kits are available for all but the exterior mounted trim cyls.

I think Mercury discontinued the '89-'06 single ram kits. Or at least I have been unable to locate the replacement number.

In most repairs all the springs guides and balls are not needed so, if you don't have a local hydraulic shop which is the cheapest place to get o rings and wipers need here's a link that might help you with the repairs on the "89 to"06 single ram repairs RRitt. yes. in general ... you don't need to replace balls unless there is water in the fluid and you don't need to replace the springs unless there is rust. Although - also in general - if you are a marina or mechanic it is easier to just replace them and have one less thing to worry about.

This is the dual piston type from the mid 70's. I think it's called a non-integral type. At any rate I got everything, motor trim, trim pump, trim control unit and mercontrol box for $200. I'm wooped now. Just getting that thing back into my shop wore me out.

If cost to the customer is no object then just install a shock rod kit 8134271 and pass the savings on to the customer

How many 85HP did Mercury make? He never said his year. could it be the old dual side-mount ram? or maybe the gooseneck three ram?

Seriously? buy a shock rod kit? That's nuts. I think my cost on those seals is around $3. If mercury still sells the kits I bet the printed instructions cost them more than the seals.

I have seen those kits in the mercury catalog while searching for Force stuff. If you can't find it through mercury, then search ebay for trim cylinder repair and feed the part numbers back into the Merc. database using "search for part". Sometimes it is easier to do that than find older mercury parts by engine type.

Ya I did give limited information didn't I. So the seller says it's a 75. I haven't actually run the serial numbers yet to verify.

deleted post.

dude, you told somebody to use a $330 shock rod kit instead of going to a local hydraulics shop and buying $5 worth of seals. Then you told them to pass the savings on to the customer.

1975? I think you are looking for repair kit # 48664A1. Go to an internet parts shop like doug russel, boats dot net, ishop, etc and search for the part number. See if their drawing looks like your ram.

Re: Power Trim Find

you mis-understood. mechanics and marinas working on trim innards should have balls and springs in stock. The cost of the part is almost nothing and the professional mechanic should just replace them as a matter of policy. It costs less to just replace them than to keep track of and inspect every single trim system.

However, the home DIY probably doesn't have access to the same parts inventory or industrial supply chain. There is a very good chance that 20 year old mercury is higher quality than the brand new stuff he might buy from a local hardware store. Additionally, there is significant risk that the home DIY would use the wrong size or spring constant. For him, it is better to re-use the original unless he has a specific reason not to.
