If ever, how often r u to change the trim lube in reservoir? Checked mine othr day - was full but had brownish color to it. What r the steps to changing it out...can I just pump the old out of reservoir and put in new without running it?

My thought would be that it's akin to the power steering reservoir in your auto.

I'd use the infamous "Turkey baster"(with or without smaller tubing attatched) technique, suck what you can out, fill, run(cycle)a few times...repeat.

It won't completely change the old, but after a couple of series you will significantly clean it up without the need to bleed the system.

Oh...and the only "tool" needed is an old (I felt the wrath of Khan after using one from the kitchen!)garage dedicated baster!

The only issue I see would be knowing what type of fluid is in there already as ive heard its not good to mix different types of fluid. Just draining the res. only gets about half of it out thus you have a 50:50 mix of two fluids. If you know whats in there and replace with the same that would be a great way to do it.

LOL - i think i remember reading about that incident...

the story i hear on this topic is that it is good for life - unless there is a known water/dirt intrusion.

Re: Power Trim Lube ?

Its the original fluid. Frequently checked level and never low...just got dirty i guess. Sounds like a small, easy job to do for most...for me....its gonna be a PITA. B/c of the design of trlr, my boat transom sits VERY low to the ground b/c of the back cross membr of trlr...also this crossmembr is directly below the drain hole/back of transom....which PREVENTS the outdrive from being trimmed totally in (which would use the FULL range of the trim cylinders to purge trim lube) without hitting the crossmembr. So, if I ever want to totally trim (in) I have to... (1) load the boat on trlr with transom sticking out aft beyond cmbr of trlr aprx a foot + back the trlr up on car ramps so keel doesn't hit the ground when trimming in or (2) jack boat up off trlr so I have enuff clearance trim lower unit without hitting cmbr or ground. See how much fun I have when it comes time to service the drive...and I haven't even touched anything yet....LOL!

You could always disconnect the cylinders from the drive.
