My trim was working fine today while boating, then all of a sudden it would not raise up. after trying it several times I stopped and checked the fluid which was just about empty. I filled it up but trim would not go up. It make the sound as if its moving up but it does not go up. Ive heard over heating could be the problem. How long would it take to cool back down? and is there anything I need to do or reset?? I waited almost an hour and still no luck. 2007 volvo penta 5.0 gxi single prop. drive unit is SX-A 1.00 2 numbers were 3883601 ans 4202181742 motor is 5.0 Gxi-G two numbers there also 3869364, 4202181742

Would probably help if told us what engine and drive you have. Year, etc.

Well, that made things closer. Got a full model number or serial number for your engine?

I pulled boat out of water, My trim unit is external and sits next to out drive on right side of it. I t was empty filled it and one problem solved trim work perfect. But when It gets to the top of it cycle and I keep holding the trim buttton it sprays fluid out of the unit from a small round white colored "plug" for a lack of a better term. Is this some sort of pressure releif valve or is that a serious problem. as long as I dont keep buttton pressed and stop when I get to the up position it doesnt leak. Is this an issue with this type of pump ?

When i originally said I filled resivour up I actually filed up power sterring resivour not the trim which I later found was external under the water line.

That was a big problem with the early SX-A drives.

Have a look at this thread. http://forums.iboats.com/volvo-pent...enta-sx-dps-trim-pump-replacement-567069.html

Here is the service bulletin on the change.

Re: Power Trim problems

Thanks looks like im buying new parts.. One more question my manual says nothing about what type of fluid to use in trim unit, there was a bottle of power steering/power trim fluid on the boat. I bought it used. Some people tell m w30 oil, some tranny fluid, some say this stuff. which should I be using. The stuff that cam out when I removed face plate is milky white?

Re: Power Trim problems

My dealer is getting me the Part at his cost but I'm still paying $90 a hour for the labor and its about a 3 hour job so its gonna cost me about $600. I had to show the parts manager the bulletin and give him the part number (which I only had because of your help). I also contacted Volvo they may help with possible goodwill assistance. But I'm not holding my breath. This may make or break it for me getting a Merc next boat. It's Volvo's bad design and nothing else that is causing this problem. I am still shocked that this is not a recalled item and fixed for free. For Volvo to cover this problem in full would totally lock people into getting another Volvo $600 out of their pocket for a lifetime Volvo owner should be a no brainer! Thanks for all your help Don.

Re: Power Trim problems

I hope they help you. why the didn't stick with the inside trim pumps used in the SX drives is beyond me. That plastic housing with glued in plugs in a high pressure system was stupid.
