power trim pump - fluid - cap

So....going through my manual (just bought the boat last year) and it said
"If not previously done, unscrew fill cap and remove cap plug from fill neck and discard"

I remembered seeing that red plug from last year - not sure why its even in there in the first place I guess
but it was still there and never removed - so I just pulled it and threw it away, hope that is right.
under the yellow cap that's vented, it should just be the straight to the fluids right? no other pieces.

what damage does this cause? I'm guessing nothing ever vented obviously
I'm sure it has been ran this way for YEARS

it was low so I added some trim fluid, it was pretty clear, but the reservoir is dark brown

Gee, what motor are you working on? Year and HP? What fill cap are you referring to?

check out that link, the cap referred as A was still in the dam thing, not discarded
atleast I hope I was supposed to remove it.....
Now I have the fluid, and the yellow cap with a vent on it - nothing in between
used to have fluid, then this red plug thing, then the yellow cap

You might repost in the Mercruiser I/O section. Looks to me like instructions for initial fill of PTT pump.
