I am trying to remove the Power trim unit from my 1988 80HP Merc(S/N OB309672). Is it possible to get it out once the mounting bolts are removed with the motor brackets(and motor) still in place. I am not having any luck. The trim motor is bad and i need to remove it for repair.

NO. You have to remove the starboard side bracket wing. Which means you have to secure the motor (chain or rope to an engine hoist or motor toter) & remove the starboard side tilt tube (steering tube) nut. A 1/4 inch drive allen socket with long extension WILL remove the allen screw closest to the transom. I've done a ton of them this way. There is no reason to pull the motor from the boat.
