I have a 2000 150 h.p. Johnson -trim motor replaced 6 years ago-Last week or so motor running slower and slower especially when full trim up or down. Now nothing -battery in good shape. Are there any trouble shooting options or is this probably a replacement situation. Thank you

Electricity makes the motor run. More voltage = more trim motor speed. Accordingly, check the electrical connections for corrosion.

More voltage = more trim motor speed.
Not exactly...
V = I x R
  • V = Voltage in volts
  • I = Current in amps
  • R = Resistance in ohms
Reading voltages in an unloaded circuit is useless as troubleshooting tool.

step one... open clean/shine redo any connections associated with power distribution to the trim motor. the cleaner the junctions the more amps will flow to the motor and back via the ground.

voltage without amps = no much going down below

if you trim motor is relay controlled....dirty pitted relay contacts will introduce a resistive load stopping amps from reaching the motor. If the motor can be fed solid +12v /grd off the battery and works great then the problem is top side ....chase backwards

OK Dingbat, if the voltage is lower at the PTT motor, will the PTT motor get more or less amps? Will it run faster or slower with less voltage?

I am trying to keep it simple.....
