I have a 50hp oil injected Mercury Outboard Serial #06100373. The power trim/tilt works to raise and lower the motor but eventually it will always lower to upright position. It will lower itself from all the way up to all the way down in about 30 minutes by itself. I have seen some similar posts but haven't really seen a resolution yet. My intention was to include a picture but I still need to figure that option out. Basically, there is a cyclinder on the left with a slotted bolt on the lower portion with a hydralic ram to the right of it.

1. To check the fluid level, do I open that screw on the bottom of the cyclinder on the left with the motor in the upright position? It doesn't look like much fluid would go in there and I'm afraid all the fluid will drain out.

2. Based on the symptom above, is it possible that the unit just needs fluid or does it sound like a seal problem. (that seemed to be the opinion of the motor service guy I called and he said it is not a simple job).

3. On this type of motor, is there a manual release screw so you can move the power trim/tilt manually? I looked for it but couldn't find it. The owners manual doesn't mention it. I was thinking of trying to check if this was loose if I could locate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
