Powerdrive issues?

I bought a used unit about 3 years ago(was a year old apparently) and since the beginning, turning is loud. I guess it's hard to explain but you can hear the turn part of the motor, it's very loud. It's not a grinding sound, like the motor is struggling. I don't know anyone else with the same motor so I'm not sure if it's normal or not.

Re: Powerdrive issues?

What model is it? I have been inside mine and I beive that the nylon gears on yours have some kind of a problem. It is not bad to disasemble but you need some mechanical talent to put it back together. You should hear some noise the wiring of a motor but not a growl or grinding. Those motor hold up very well under normal use. Mine is over six years old and it trolls alot of hours during the summer. Make sure the
motor drive sleve is not tight on the kevlar tube that carries the drive unit. Lift it off of the vertical hight setting block and it should turn with no effort 360 degrees. The motor is worth fixing even if you have to pave for it. Good Luck!

It's a 2004 model, 50 thrust 12 volt. I called minn kota and the gal said to pull the prop and check for water or the turn motor might need to be replaced.

Re: Powerdrive issues?

I just found out on a different board that it's normal. Apparently the motor that turns the head is noticeably loud. I locked it in out in the garage and manually turned it. You can hear the motor gears turn and it makes a loud winding sound. Wish there was a way to dull that down.

Continue to spin the motor manually and you will end up replacing parts. Let the motor do its job.

I have the same one.
Works fine but is loud.
I thought the same thing as you but after 5 years of use still works...still loud too.
Keep your foot control undercover(dry, dirt free) when not in use and it should last you along time.

Thinking of putting a radio in the boat to drown it out.....I guess I'm glad to hear it's normal. I built a storage compartment in the casting deck that I put the foot control in when not in use.

Re: Powerdrive issues?

It was to duplicate the sound

The reason for my comment is that turning the shaft by hand may result in spinning the gears much faster than the motor would turn it and with more force applied to the gear-set.

gotcha, I turned it much slower than what the foot control turns it.
