Ive been reading the forums on this and getting mixed results. some say ya some say nay so im guessing it has more to do with the application.

I have a 22' bow rider and im wanting to add a powered subwoofer. I do not want to have a separate amp because i would like to keep things simple. The Pioneer head-unit seems to be running the 4 JBL 6.5's fine for my liking, but i would like a little bump to fill out the music (mostly rock, maybe a little pop or rap for the ladies).

I dont need to be king dingaling of the lake, but i want to have good sound at 50mph so im down to two choices ( let me know if both of these are terrible ideas please :)

1. JBL powered 10" mounted into one of the side bench seats kick panel. only concern is, im guessing the Fosgate would sound better side by side.
Amazon.com: JBL MPS1000 10-Inch 250-Watt Powered Marine Subwoofer: Car Electronics

or

2. Rockford Fosgate 12" mounted in the engine compartment Amazon.com: Rockford Fosgate P300-12 Punch 300 Watt Powered Loaded 12-Inch Subwoofer Enclosure: Car Electronics
The engine area has a ton of room and doesn't get very hot. But im worried it will sound muffled compared to the JBL and cause rattles.

Any opinions or experienced advice?
Thank you :)

If you're happy with no amp on your 6.5 speakers I would think either powered sub would work for you. Both are good brands. I tend to lean toward smaller subs because I like tight controlled bass.

I agree, Go with the 10''. Much better sound quality.

Dont put that sub in the engine compartment, it will just rattle and you wont hear any bass, I did a buddies like that and with the compartment open it rocked, but as soon as you close it, bass was gone. He even had vents for it to the outside and didn't help. See if you can get it up under the drivers console, ive done that a few times and works great.
