Today the funeral service was held for a Toronto police officer killed in the line of duty last week. Estimates are that 12,000 police and emergency services personnel from across North America came to Toronto for the service. Thousands more citizens lined the procession route. It was truly amazing and inspiring to witness such an outpouring of support and respect for someone who gave his life protecting others. One of the most striking things was the sound of silence, as only the tread of dress boots on pavement could be heard. For block after block after block they marched in formation, a sea of uniforms as far as you could see. It seemed the whole city was in mourning this day.
