Powerhead decision ... Rebuild or Remanufactured

I was going to rebuild my powerhead again (just rebuilt 2 years ago) until I opened it up and found issues I am not confident about. I'm seriously considering swaping it out for a remanufactured one. I have a few questions I would like to ask. I am still trying to make my decision but I'm about 90% sure I will be going the remanfactured route.

2 years ago when I rebuilt the old one the problem I had was water in the crankcase had rusted a couple of pistons in their bore. I spent hours studying the block trying to find a crack or a problem with the heads or the exhaust manifold and could not find where the water had gotten in. I had one cyl rebored, replaced the pistons, rings and bearings and put it back together. She ran great but I have suspected the water problem might still exist because the lower left sparkplug would from time to time have a little rust on it. I did a compression test the other day and that lower left read just under 60psi. I pulled the powerhead today and opened it up and found the lower left rod bearing rusty. This was a new bearing 2 years ago and the other 3 bearings have no rust on them. There are also some marks on the crankshaft where that bearing rides that look a bit questionable to me. What I plan on doing is taking it to the machine shop I use and letting him look it over and give me an opinion. If he can't tell about my water intrusion problem or thinks the crankshaft is trash then my decision is made.

So my questions about remanufactured powerheads.
1. At Iboats and other online sites I have checked it looks like the going rate for a 115 is around $2200 + core charge. I was wondering how much is shiping on a powerhead?

2. Are there any places near Central Florida say within 2 hrs of Orlando that cary remanufactured powerheads and would it be more cost efective to swap it out locally than to pay the shipping charges?

3. Is there anything else I should know about shoping for a remanfactured powerhead?

So basically I am looking at roughly $800 and a few hours of my own labor for a powerhead that may or may not last or $2500 (I'm not counting on the full core refund) for a rebuilt one.

See if he can perform Zyglo/dye or non-magnetic tests for cracks on the powerhead halves. If not, you might want to check around for a shop that can. Good luck!

Most likely a leakage between the block and cylinder liner.
If using the old block, liners must be pulled and checked for leak in the casting. Will probably be both cheaper and safer going with a rebuilt unit.
When installing, advisable with new impeller and carb kits at the same time.

If you've got the cash....and piece of mind is important to you....then go for the reman motor. If you're always going to be 'suspect' of your rebuilt motor, you won't enjoy your boat as much IMO.

Exhaust water leaks tend to affect the lower cyls. Did you check closely for casting porosity in the inner exhaust manifold? You can visually check with a strong light, or by pooling water on the manifold to check for leaks.
