after replacing the head ghasket on my 50hp FORCE it runs much better now, and actually pumps water like it should, BUT it wont run with the cowling installed ( well it will barely run) becuase its leaking exhuast and water at the base of the power head.

how hard is it to R&R this gasket, and is it availble seperatly? as ive only seen it thus far listed as a complete gasket kit.

I figure remove the lower cowl, remove anything in the way, linkages and such, and remove the power head, clean surfaces and reinstall, what am I missing, the manual isnt real detailed, I think the seloc manuals stink, IM in the market for a clymers manual in addition to this seloc ive found locally.

thanks for the help, and any ideas anyone mught offer.

I plan to recheck compression now since I can actually run it up to operating temp now.

Re: powerhead/exhuast housing gasket where to get?

I just did my 200 Evinrude, a 50hp should be easy - I would think. Gasket was $13.13, and I could do it in an hour now. If you have a torque wrench and patence to use a razor knife on the gasket surface you may be OK. I needed an engine hoist (head=400lbs), you may not. The hardest part was aligning the bolts when reseating and making sure all axis are level. Be very carful not to gouge threads on "perminate" bolts. Just my insight, good luck!

Ive been out looking it over, and I cant figure out how to remove the lower cowl?

will it come off or drop down with the power head in place?

if it would I could watch the base and see for sure where the water smoke is coming from.

I think its mostly coming from the base gasket, but might be some coming from the exhaust plate cover also.

I wonder how mnay hours a shop would quote to do this job?

IM really tired of messing with it, maybe I should just take a break for a coupe of days.

Hello OZ..Start with MERC PARTS EXPRESS .COM .They will hook you up with a dealer in your area .Start with the cover gasket and move on from there.Should add both cover gaskets. Remember the sandwich.
