Powerhead Repair Stand

Hi. I have the powerhead off my OMC V4 and have been working on it while it's on the work bench. It's amazine how small that looks with everything stripped off it, considering it's horsepower.

Even with it's small size, that sucker is still kind of heavy to be rolling and turning around when I need to get to a different side of it. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for a homemade or improvised powerhead repair stand that I could bolt the powerhead to and easily rotate it as I work on it. For now, I may just put a piece of plywood on a seat swivel and mount the engine to that so I can at least rotate it on one plane.

I would be interested in a factory built stand if it's cheap enough. Any ideas?

Thanks!

A cheap light duty motor stand for a car motor works well. It sits sideways, but that's not so bad. You might even know somebody that has one you can borrow. :)

Jeez, time sure flies! Seems like I just posted that topic yesterday. Thanks for the info, Willy. I kind of thought an automotive engine stand was about my only option. The last time I checked them out at the chain auto parts stores, they weren't too expensive. Maybe I'll spring for one.

Re: Powerhead Repair Stand

Hi RealBoats,
My favorite work stands are several that I've made over the years that mount in a vice. If I part out a junked lower unit for whatever reason, particularly if the driveshaft got bent or chewed up, I save the top 5-inches or so of the driveshaft with the splines. I then have it welded to a 1x1 block of steel to make a convenient stand. The whole powerhead rotates quite easily on the axis of the crankshaft, which makes wiring and installing peripheral stuff easier...
- Scott

Thats a great idea Scott. Especially the ability to rotate it for servicing different areas.
