Powerhead WILL NOT come out!

So I finally got around to getting my powerhead out again. 150hp inline 6. All the bolts around the bottom are loose. I can rock it back and forth, it's obviously not stuck. I built a little frame out of 2x4's above it, and tied two ropes to the flywheel. Me and another guy pulled on the ropes as hard as we could, it's as if it's still bolted on. Any ideas?

I think I've seen some once. :D The bolts are loose though, I can rock it back and forth and it seperates about 1/4" on both sides. When pulling it straight up though it doesn't seperate at all.

Is that the little arm that moves when shifting that's underneath the carbs? If so it's disconnected...

Alright, I've decided to try and weld my own lifting ring for the flywheel. Can somebody explain to me the proper procedure for removing the flywheel nut? (how do I keep the flywheel from turning?)

Leave the pugs in and rap the ratchet handle with a large rubber (or brass) mallet.

-W

ZmOz,

The lifting eye, screws into the flywheel, you don't want to remove the flywheel nut, or all you're gonna lift is the flywheel itself.

Good luck trying to make one, I believe you have to cut 1-1/2" x 16tpi threads on a piece of tube and have clearance enough to go around the flywheel nut...

I'm planning on getting another nut that fits over the end of the crankshaft and welding a ring onto that. $30 for a lifting ring is ridiculous to say the least...

Re: Powerhead WILL NOT come out!

Edit: Nevermind, the LU is off now. The powerhead will rock back and forth quite a bit and I can see the studs moving up and down when I do so. (so they're not stuck) The motor STILL won't come out! What could possibly be holding it?!?!??!?!?!?! I'm lifting up the whole back end of the boat...

ZM-

All I can think of is to make sure you remove all eight (8) nuts. There are two of them up in the front that are outside of the HP tag. If the LU is off it's not binding on that. You will need to disconnect the shift shaft too.

Good luck

- Brian

Re: Powerhead WILL NOT come out!

Best way to tell if one of the studs is 'salted' in place or otherwise stuck is to pry on it with the flat-bladed part of a big screwdriver, to see if it moves freely. It also should 'ping' when you rap on the side of the stud smartly with another metal implement. If it's stuck, it'll have a 'dull' sound. You'll have to use a combination of heat and wedges to break it loose. Sometimes can be a real bugger.

If you don't have access to a hot torch, try a MAPP gas torch. I picked up a self-igniting Bernzomatic torch from Lowes and it works great. Nice hot flame. You have to be careful with oxyacetylene outfits as the potential is there to melt the alum. parts. A MAPP gas torch isn't as likely to do this.

At this point it's always better to pull the lower unit to eliminate it as a trouble area.

And of course as suggested previously, all the powerhead mounting nuts must be off!!! The 2 hidden in the very front are often missed, as are the 2 smaller ones in the back (only found on certain motors).

HTH and Break out the Mercury Wrench (Torch)!...ed
