powerheads

I have a problem with my 1986 150 hp overheating. 2 years ago it only ran hot at low rpms and cooled at high rpms. Replaced the stats(which I found it did not have), poppet valve, and waterpump last May. Last summer it would start to pee for about 5 min. and then stop peeing and steam starts to come out. I always stop the motor when this happens. I have been through everything several times and everything seems to be ok, but the problem is still there. The psi shows 3 to 8 at slow to fast speed. Could the powerheads get clogged and cause this problem? Does anyone have an idea?

Re: powerheads

Low water pressure at low speed can be caused by an improperly seating poppet valve or an exhaust adaptor plate gasket leak, under the powerhead, spilling cooling water before the motor into the exhaust passage.

Re: powerheads

I have been through the poppett valve two or three times. If the water passage is clogged what is the best way to clear it out? Also last spring when replacing the poppet valve I found what appeared to be a gas line with a bolt in the center plugging the back half of the poppet unit. I was told it was not suppose to be there. I put it back together without the bolt/hose. This is when the psi dropped. I am thinking of putting it back in to see if the pressure will com back up. Any idea why the someone would plug this back hole of the poppet.?

Re: powerheads causing over heating?

Went back in the poppet valve and replaced the hose/bolt rig. The water pressure started showing 5 psi at idle and 12 psi at 3000 rpm. I was only able to run the motor at the ramp still on the trailor but it showed no sign of over heating. I will take it out this Sunday on the water. Does anyone have a clue why the psi goes up with this rig plugging the back half of the poppet valve
