i have a 1966 inboard that i'm restoring. it has a 1966 327 with a 1966 mercurydrive. my question is how to get the gimbal bearing out. this bearing does not have the cut out places as my replacement does. i have a slide hammer to pull it out. but when i went to pull it out it looks like the bearing is made inside of the unit. there's a cover plate about 1/2 wide circular with a hole in the middlefor the shaft to go threw and looks like plastic on the back side of it that's blocking it's path from coming out. it's made out of aluminuim. does the bearing still come out the front or out of the back of this model if it does come out the front how do you get that piece off without tearing it up.
