I can’t figure out why the slot in bible housing won’t turn the right direction as what the shift shaft requires. I have attached a picture of the positions and what gear the out drive is in, is this the correct/normal pattern. The arrow is the direction the brass foot is facing. Thanks for the help

It dosent turn because you have the lower splined shaft in reverse instead of forward. Drop the lower unit, turn the splined shaft fully clockwise while turning the prop counter clockwise until locked, install upper unit with brass shoe in a straight line

Which pre-alpha? (MC1, R, MR, E-Z, O, and so on)... Only 1 of those positions is correct, forward. The other 2 have gone the wrong way.

That is what I am wondering, the boat shift shoe and cable go the other direction mirroring just the opposite of my lower unit. Thanks for your help chris!!

Not sure if your "Thanks for your help Chris!!!" is sarcasm...

I was just answering the question you asked.

So, has the lower unit been disassembled recently?

Chris.....

Nope it wasn’t sarcastic, I am 17 and any help is greatly appreciated!

Don't belive that it was disassembled, I just bought the boat to fix it and flip it.

By 'flip' I assume you mean sell.... (I'm 58, and don't speak 'street'... :D)

Have you pulled the drive off? If so, pull it off again (doesn't take long)... You may have to separate the upper and lower. But you need to establish where the problem is, top or lower....

Yes I have pulled outdrive, I replaced the bellows, trim senders, and the gimble bearing. I am confident the upper is good and correct. I replaced the impeller in the lower. The brass slot shoe that the lower shift cable attaches to rotate in the correct direction as suggested by previous posts. The lower unit shift just seams to rotate the wrong way.. any advice...

Split the drive and move the shift shoe over 1 tooth. Before bolting the drive halves back together, make sure it's shifting in the proper direction, as BT showed in post #3.

(Been there, done that, have the T-shirt........)

Tyler,

How do you know it's the wrong way? :D....

The 'correct' direction for forward is that it LOCKS in reverse, and for reverse, it LOCKS when you turn the prop in the forward direction....

You may be confusing forward and reverse, in which case, you put the drive in REVERSE, then lined up the intermediate shift shaft to be facing forward....

We have 3 shift shafts on these drives. (BTW, no such thing as a 'pre-alpha' drive. You probably have a Mercruiser-1 drive, or MC1 for short.)... The shaft that goes through the exhaust cavity in the bell housing is the upper shift shaft. The shaft that is inside the lower housing (with the spline on the top), is the lower shift shaft, and the one that flops around in the upper housing, with the splines in the bottom and the 'shoe' on the top, is the intermediate shift shaft....

You need to split the housings again and change the position of the intermediate shift shaft, just like fishrdan suggests....

HTH,

Chris........

What, just the one? ;) :D

Thanks!! I think I must have had the gears mixed up, I was basing the gears off the prop. I must have the wrong prop then right. I have thought a lot about the the prop would do when spinning and have concluded I have a reversed prop. I attached some picture of my prop, this isn’t the correct prop right? Thanks for the tips about the gears that relived a lot of stress!!
