79 Merc 228hp, newer shift cable, just put on a used outdrive, had the shift professionally adjusted and it shifted well (i.e., normal) for the first many outings. In the mean time, I have noticed very almost microscopic metal flakes the continue to collect on the magnetic drain plug.
Progressively, the shifting "zone" from forward or reverse into nuetral has been "widening". Shifting into neutral from forward requires the lever to be pulled back farther than the true "nuetral point". Shifting from reverse into neutral requires the lever to move farther forward of the true nuetral position.
Now, the boat sometimes stalls when going into reverse, if I don't stop perfectly at the "engage" point. I'm wondering if this sounds more like gears, shift dog, as I think the cables are in pretty good shape.
Thanks for your thoughts!
