I have a 1973 pre alpha drive that needs a lower unit. i also have an alpha drive that has a bad upper gear case. the question i have is everything is the same on both lower units BUT... the pre alpha has a spring pin on top of the vertical drive shaft and the alpha does not. will this work or not? or how do i make it work

Ayuh,... You can interchange the lowers No Problem,... Plug & Play...
But,...
The Lower from the Trashed Upper will be full of that Trash,+ will probably Fail very soon...
It needs a complete tear down,+ rebuild before it can be servicable....

bondo thank u very much for the quick reply. thats been done already (alpha lower goone through and the gears/ shift assembly were replaced and the unit resealed) thats why i want to use it (should have mentioned that before) So why the spring pin anyways? was it just something merc. decided was not needed or does it actually serve a purpose?

or does it actually serve a purpose?
the way i understand it. that pin performs an important purpose. it the preload pin for keeping the gears in mesh wear the change if direction takes place. the gear that drives the prop shaft gears is always trying to come out of mesh. that pin keeps that from occurring.

that is one of the design features of the alpha1 that was revised from the 1 drive. in the alpha, the gear thats attatched to the drive shaft now has a way to keep it stationary so the gears can't come out of mesh.... thus no preload pin.

that's the way i get it...

You understand correctly Admiral. It's to preload the bearings.
