I cought a piece of a TV program today where they were using pre-fabricated stringers and related under the deck products in rebuilding a project boat. They said that the stuff was made by Compsys Inc but can't find any info on the web. It looked like a real good alternative to glass encapsulated wood.

Anybody seen or used this?

Howard

SoLittle... You been watchin' ol' John Greviskis, Mr. Ship Shape TV again?... :p

Might this be what your looking for?..
http://www.westmarine.co m/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&categoryId=165&langId=-1&subdeptNum=11160&storeNum=4

I do like the idea but I think they were just using the single layer of 24oz Bi-ax fiberglass cloth which to me seems to be a little less than enough... I'd layup more Glass over it to beef it up...

You could create your own stringers like those with polyurethane foam sheets... My local supply shop sells(or at leats they did) 4' X 8' X 2" sheets of 2lb. density urethane foam... You could cut out your own shape and glass over it... Probably cheaper too..

Mumbler & B.J. - You both nailed it! I too had a question in my mind that it would be strong enough and yeah I was peeking at Ship Shape. (I saw this program for the first time last week - need more like it for us boating folks).

Wonder if you could handle a related question - A couple of years ago I had a local shop replace the transom on my 1988 23' Wellcraft. The guy asked me if I wanted to go with a wood core or use a relatively new product that they use on racing boats. Of course I said go for it (the new stuff). It came in 4X8' sheets, was about 2" thick, uniform construction (ie not a foam/glass sandwich), green, quite light in weight and looked somewhat like fiberglass blown from a chopper gun. I want to say it ran about $200.00 a sheet. Does this ring a bell and if so what do you call it?

Howard

I have seen the stuff that you describe, but can't for the life of me remember what it's called.... The only name that comes to mind is something like "Glasspack" or something to that effect....

Was it like a foam with small random strands of fiberglass (like mat) going thru it?... If so thats the stuff I'm thinking of... Strong stuff...

I can't find it anywhere on the web though..

B.J. - Sorta like what you describe though as I recall the "filler" did not look like the traditional foam. Sorry but can't describe it any better.

Maybe someone else can jump in?
