Pre-mix or VRO?

I have a '87 Johnson 70 HP VRO. I am rebuilding it and wondering whether or not to remove the VRO and just premix. If I remove the VRO, how do I do it? What extra parts are there? If I keep the VRO, is there an alarm to tell me if the injectors are not working?

Re: Pre-mix or VRO?

Check out the articles on whether or not to disable VRO and how to do it, DD. They are in the Engine FAQs section.

Good luck. :)

Re: Pre-mix or VRO?

I asked the same question about a month ago.
my solution was: both
considering your VRO is an early VRO it mixes alot leaner oil mixture than the later VRO's do.
mine is about the same vintage VRO.
i am sure it is fine to idle at 100/1 mixture but it won't hurt to have a bit more oil.
so i mix my gas at 100/1 and run it with the operational VRO.
And Yes it should have a warning system.
I plan on running my VRO this way until the pump dies and then i will replace it with a regular fuel pump and 50/1 premix.
it does not smoke any more now than if i premixed and i have the assurance that it will never run completely dry of oil.
