Someone told me that running Premium fuel (93 octane) in a 2 stroke would actually hurt performance.... is that true?

Have been running on Premium 95 octane gasoline for years with no prob at all on different brand engines. Higher rated gasolines will keep your engine more clean than lower ones as stated by manufacturers owners manuals, who knows...

Re: Premium Fuel?

Depending on the size of your motor, [it] may actually be better to run on a lower octane of gasoline....The higher you go in octane rating, the higher the level of ethanol (alcohol), and that can be subsequently bad for certain outboards, especially some smaller 2-strokes - their carbs do not like those higher levels of ethanol.

I actually just had to replace the carb in my Merc due to ethanol separation that caused alot of corrosion in the carb...

Re: Premium Fuel?

It's a 1978 800 Merc. The reason I'm asking is, at the lake where I boat there are 2 Marinas. One sells 87 octane for $5.00 per gal. The other sells 91 for $4.79.... both are ethanol free. I was just wondering if the 91 octane would cause problems.

If both fuels are ethanol free than I would opt for the 91...just has me wondering why he is selling 91 for less than 87...hhhmmmmmm????

Re: Premium Fuel?

The only difference really between ethanol-free low octane fuel and high octane fuel (aside from the obvious octane rating) is that higher octane fuels tend to carbon up the chambers, piston tops, intake valves, and plugs. If an engine runs on 93 all the time (in this area) it is very dirty inside. Lots of black carbon. Of all the engines I've had apart, the cleanest were the ones that ran the cheap fuel. Now, you can also use a bottle of Ringfree (sold by Yamaha) that does an excellent job of removing carbon deposits. On 4 strokes, change the oil after you run the stuff through the fuel. On 2 strokes it does a great job of removing the carbon from behind the rings and from the chambers and piston tops. The stuff works!
