I had cracks form in my Pontoon Logs at end of this season. The good news it they are warranted. However this means paying for painting of NEW logs, not getting them repainted for next year.

I talked to two places, one said they an epoxy on the logs and then prime and bottom paint.

The other primes and then puts on the bottom paint.

Does anyone know what the epoxy is and purpose ? I do not want to put something on there that may peel. When I bought the boat it was prepped and painted.

Sometimes different does not mean better.

Thanks,

Here is Florida epoxy is the normal primer. From what I understand they use a bottom paint that is not compatible with aluminum so they epoxy first so the two wont meet. The epoxy also gives the film a stronger bond. In a lake setting things might be all together different.

Aircraft use a primer that chemically etches the surface of the alum. Next coat is epoxy, then your finish coat - but that's not epoxy as it's well known to yellow when exposed to sunlight. Not sure if that's any help or not....
