Prepping and paint quandry....

I finally got all the paint off my 16' open 3-seater Starcraft. After reading many threads, I'm confused as to which cleaning procedure is best for cleaning the hull just prior to painting. I've read that Tide and water would do a good job; and I've read that 50/50 water to vinegar does a good job.
Is one better than the other, or is it strictly preference?

And as far as the paint goes, I'm not sure if I'll buy a quart of Rust-o-leum/Tremclad at $13, or go to the local auto-paint guy and buy a 2 part self-etching primer for $48. Then he said he could mix up a polymer type topcoat to any colour I want... for another 40 bucks a quart that is. But he said it would be very very good. Mind you, I'll get 2 quarts of the primer from the paint guy cuz it's a 50/50 mixture and each part is a quart on its own. Decisions decisions..... I need some one the think for me.

Re: Prepping and paint quandry....

Welcome to iBoats!

Personally I would use the vinegar wash. The acidity of the vinegar helps clean the aluminum and gives it some "Bite" for the primer. As for primer. You MUST use a Self Etching Primer if you want the Paint to STICK. It is NOT an option. Rustoleum makes a self etching primer in a can but if you have a HVLP spray gun I would use SEM's http://www.semproducts.com/Catalog.asp?prod=139
As for Paint, A lot of the guys use Rustoleum Premium Oil based. Personally, I like Pettit Easypoxy. You could paint your boat for around $120 with the EasyPoxy. Less than $50 with Rusty'

You can use the Roll and Roll method to apply it or spray it with HVLP. As with any paint PREP is the key. Follow the Manufacturer's directions EXACTLY. When in doubt CALL their help desk and ASK Questions. That's what they are for.

"If you don't take the time to do it right the first time...
How will you find the time to do it right the second time!"

I'm just sayin...:D

OK... I'll go with the vinegar wash and the 2 part primer. Thanks for the input.
