Is there a detailed description or video for removing old bearings from the gear and pressing in the new once? I am talking about those that go onto the yoke. How far to press? How hard? Will the standard tool like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vWeSAQERqU) work? Or I just use the hummer? The outdrive is Alpha One Gen II. Thanks.

Yes, that tool will work for separating some bearings.

Which bearings are you referring to? Upper? Lower? There a few inside a Gen II drive and they require different processes for removing.

Do you have a manual? Merc #14 is the correct manual for a Gen II

Have a look here for removal and replace

Another method to remove, but I wouldn't do it this way unless the bearing cage was already broke

I agree AllDodge, I would never try to do what the second video suggested. WHY? He had the bearing puller there. Why not just use it and save the bearing and fingers as well? :noidea:

And some people wonder why the get hurt in the shop. SMH!

Thanks for all responses. I am talking about this very assembly that Chris is setting the preload for, in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPr4UQPMBXg

But before putting it in, I have to replace the bearing assembly. Yes, I have the right manual, but there is not much detail.

The first video uses a good size press. My main question: is that size really needed? Will it be that difficult, or a small hand operated set (shown in the next video) will do the job (will be sufficient)?

Please, advise. Thanks.

You can use a 2 jar puller similar to this one. Pay no attention to the socket and breaker bar

Now to put them back together, you need something with enough force to do it. A large bench vise, arbor press, or other. The issue is you need enough force with also enough room to be able to do it

You could also take it to a machine shop and they could do it for about $20

GEN II uses rolling torque on the yoke gearing . You just dont press it into position .
