I finally got a pressure fuel tank for my 1956 30 HP Johnson. I've never run this engine, but I'd like to. :)

Can someone give me a quick rundown of how to use this pressure tank? It has a primer button which I assume I have to press a few times to get the gas flowing - how many times does it need to be pressed?

How do I know if the seals are good? I pushed the button about 20 times with the tank lid on and expected to hear it hiss when I unscrewed the lid - it didn't. Should it?

The button only moves maybe 1/2 inch. That doesn't seem like a lot if it's to prime the tank - is that all it's supposed to move?

Thanks!

The buttom is used to build up pressure in the tank prior to starting the engine. The pressure forces fuel up to the engine. Once the engine is running, the "air" hose connected to the block keeps pressure on the tank.

Shouldn't take many pumps of the button to get pressure in the tank IF the diaphram under the good and all the parts are in the top. If you can't build up pressure with the buttom, could be the diaphram is shot. You can still get a lot of the parts for these tanks from a local John/Rude dealer....I think. Havn't ordered any in a while.

1/2 in is about all it moves. It pumps fuel to the carb, it does'nt pressurize the tank. When the carb is full of fuel, you will no longer be able to depress the primer. The fill cap has to be completely closed to maintain tank pressure when running.

All this, of course, is assumming no leaks between the tank and the carburator and the carburator float is actually functioning. ;)

Got it. Thanks guys. Any way to test the tank without hooking it up to the motor?

A simple way would be to set it out in the sun with a small amount of gas, and the cap closed. See if it builds, and holds pressure.
