Does anyone know where I can get a set of brushes for a MGD-4001 Prestolite starter? I've looked everywhere! I've found some prestolite brushes but they don't look like they would work.

Thanks

Re: Prestolite Brushes

Scott....sometimes they are available from a Johnny/Rude dealer if it ain't to old. Usually though, if you have the part number, they can be gotten through a NAPA dealer. Can you post the year and hp of your engine? With this, we can get you the part number.

Thanks.

Re: Prestolite Brushes

I have taken brushes that are slightly larger than the ones I need and filed them down to fit! You might try a motor rewind shop or a place that repairs starters and such.

Re: Prestolite Brushes

A guy selling prestolite brushes on ebay told me that brush set MGD-2032 would work for my starter. He didn't have any in stock, but go2marine.com has them. I'm gonna buy a set and see what happens, even though they still don't look exactly like mine. I'll let you know the verdict. They should be here Monday.

Even better news!! I found the exact brush set I needed! They sell it here on iboats. It's Arco SR102 brush set. The set is made specifically for prestolite starters.

Re: Prestolite Brushes

The brush set is in and it is exactly what I needed!! Brushes are the perfect size and everything. I'm really glad I found this set. It was around $22 I think and it beats buying a new starter or even having someone rebuild it for you at a shop! Not to mention it was super easy. I would have never guessed that a starter was that easy to rebuild.

And thats all a lot of shops would have done! Just put in new brushes and charge $100 or so.

exactly!! If you can change a tire, you can rebuild an old prestolite starter. The hardest part was getting the darn thing off the outboard!!
