Hello

I got a used prestolite trim pump for my checkmate last season and it didnt work at first, but eventually did after I took the motor apart and cleaned the area near the brushes, then it worked fine for the whole summer. Just took out the boat and tried to trim up so I could transport it, no luck. I tried trimming down just to see what would happen and it worked. Anybody know what may be going on here?

Does it click or make any noise in the up position?
It has 2 relays, one for up,one for down.
Clean all the connections and try again.

Ayuh,.. Do whatever ya did last year...
It sounds like it had just 1 more lap in it when you got it,+ now you've used it up...

Is this an older MC? The older ones only had a solenoid for UP. It could be either a solenoid or your brushes. Take a small hammer and tap (not smack) the top area of the pump motor, if this helps it is your brushes. The brush holders get corroded and don't allow the brushes to seat on the armature.

Try jumping the UP solenoid. (blue wire UP green wire DOWN). If it works the solenoid is most likely the problem.

Either way you should provide more information. Checkmate means nothing. What drive package? MC, OMC, VP? And year?

I actually added 2 extra buttons on my dashboard that connect directly from the positive terminal on my battery to the blue and green wires on the pump, which allows me to jump the solenoid in either direction with the push of a button. These switches didn't work either, so i am leaning toward the brushes being the issue. I'll clean them up again and see what happens.

Its a 1982 Mercruiser 898, type I stern drive, but I bought a different used prestolite single solenoid trim pump last year. Dont know how the old the pump I bought is, i was told that if I bought a new motor and reservior and reused my existing pump then that would be fine. It worked for a while...
