Hello Forum,

I found a great deal on a 1999 200 Johnson Ocean Runner and am pulling the 1977 Evinrude 140 off my Hydrasports for the Johnson. I'll be selling the 'Rude with full controls- steering, throttle, ignition, trim/tilt. It's in great shape - I've replaced fuel pump, rectifier, coils, power pack and has 117-120 PSI on all four cylinders (heads rebuilt by my late granddad) and a new four blade prop. Everything works, though trim does have a slow leak down. Buyer would be able to pick it up on a pallet, ready to go from the boat mechanic at Butler marine here in Charleston.

I'd appreciate some advice on what I might sell it for. From what I understand, according to this thread, it's the only Crossflow that was sold with a tuned exhaust megaphone. It's quite a performer - loud, primitive, reliable and powerful. I fished with this motor (on a different boat) with my granddad as a kid and have considered it a point of pride to have kept it running well.

Clean engine in good shape! However, the age is going to be a turnoff most buyers with all due respect. I wouldn't take less than $1250 for it.

Side question: I have an 86 110HP Johonson that is a crosslfow with tuned (bubbleback) exhaust. Did you mean that year was the only bubbleback motor? New to Johnsons/Rudes so trying to learn more about them.

The 85 hp engines from that vintage came from the factory with 125 lbs compression. Those 140's had even more compression. I'd think maybe 130 or 135+. While your compression is still great, it is showing it's age. (aren't we all.) Those 77 140's were unique in all the V4 crossflow years: the only model that came with a special (high performance) exhaust tuner in the midsection. There should be some interest by someone who knows/remembers their strong performance aspects.

That tuned exhaust came out in 1973 and was used up untill the mid 1990's--The 77 model had a different tuner than other years.---Not sure what you would do to " rebuild " the heads.----About the only thing you could do is make sure they are flat !

That's my VW talking. I mean a valve job was done on it.

What valves - intake, exhaust or reed?

GA_Boater - If I remember what my granddad told me, he had the Lake Oconee (where he lived) Evinrude guy do the intake and exhaust valves before he parked the boat in 1995 when he got sick. Pistons/rings are original. I've probably put 50 hours on the motor since I inherited it back in 2005. Hence the solid, but not like new compression numbers.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

Man, I'm a dumbass. Of course no valves on the motor. So now I'm not really sure what the heck he had done to it. All I definitely remember is him taking it to his guy because compression was way low on one bank of cylinders. He got it back and it ran fine.

I am not referring to the bubble back exhaust manifolds that came out in 73. The exhaust tuner unique to the 77 140 (only) is the tuner in the midsection. Part number 321681. Called a tuning megaphone. A very unique, high perf part.

It's piece number 68 on this diagram. Interesting, it really does look like a megaphone.

Others are also rated at 140 HP------I do not think the 77 had more power than a 1984 140 hp model.
