Hey guys,

I guess it's a matter of preference but when I was in your position a few years ago, drifter02, leaving the flywheel cover intact seemed easier. I have cut and pasted many notes over the years of doing research and am sure I have this procedure somewhere as well. Here's some reasons for you to consider. Again, just my opinion - not saying anyone is wrong in their way.

Someone please correct me if any of these observation/conclusions is wrong:

Cons to pulling the f/w cover off:

When pulling the f/w cover you disturb the front cushion, and since I'm not a pro who has seen hundreds of these I would rather not make the call on good or bad - so I would change it. It's quite possible this is original

The collar clamping bolts could be problematic too, since they are very likely original and underwater - salt water for me. Snapping one of these will bring a good sized headache.

Pulling the f/w cover will require you to do the original alignment process on the intall - one more step I did not want to have to learn about, or mess up.

Pros to leaving it on:

I've done this twice. One engine had the dust cover on, and yes, it was a pain in the neck to access, all bolts came out easy.

The f/w cover has 6 or eight bolts that give less problems because they have not been submerged. Also, keep in mind you will likely pull a couple of these anyway because they are commonly used for electrical grounding points.

Oh, pulling the lag bolts from the stringers on the engine mounts means you don't have to align the mounts either.

The rest is all the same in terms of pulling the engine, I just found that way to be both easier and held less potential trouble for a newbie like myself.

Pulling the PDS in this fashion may be different. If you're interested in knowing how, or just discussing options, I'll find it and post it.

Again, good luck.
