Primer Nipples On Manifold

Hi,
I'm a new member to the forum but not new to the great information that has helped me in the past.
I have a 2000 Johnson 130 that was sneezing a bit at idle. I've noticed a little fuel mixture on the bottom of the motor inside the compartment housing. I traced this to a cracked hose connected to the primer solenoid. While trying to pull the hose off at the manifold- it was too short to simply reconnect- I broke the tiny brass nipple (omc part 0328789) on the manifold (#1)

QUESTIONS: 1) CAN I RUN THE ENGINE FOR AN IMPORTANT FISHING TRIP I HAVE COMING UP UNTIL I RECIEVE THE PARTS I'VE ORDERED? 2) ARE THOSE NIPPLES THREADED IN OR PRESSED IN ( MAY MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE ON HOW I REPLACE THEM). I WILL PLUG THE HOLE AT THE MANIFOLD AND HOSE UNTIL REPAIRS ARE COMPLETED.

Thanks in advance,

plugged it can run forever, not advisable, just crimp the hose so it does not shoot gas all over the place. you just will not be priming that cylinder.

Re: Primer Nipples On Manifold

Thanks for the reply. I've plugged what is left of the nipple and ran the hose from the solenoid to the other nipple by removing the T and going to straight. I've started the motor up and I can't tell any difference. Hopefully this will get me through about 8 hours on the water.

Does anyone know if those nipples are pressed in? I can't tell for sure. Thanks again,

The primer is only used for cold starting; if you're not having any trouble with that there's no need to worry about it. I can't tell from the parts diagram if the brass nipple is pressed in or screwed in - you may need to wait until the replacement arrives to be sure.

Thanks, I feel better knowing it should be OK. The motor starts up pretty easy even when cold.

I was afraid of them being pressed in. I'm sure to have fun removing it- any advice? Thanks for all the great replies, X

Hmm, you need to pull this thing out and I presume there is nothing left of the nipple to grab a hold with vise grips. You don't want to drill it out because little pieces of brass could end up inside the engine. What I would try is to find a small screw that is harder than the brass (steel or stainless) and is slightly bigger than the diameter of the hole. Then with a screwdriver, put the screw into the hole and screw it in until you have a pretty good fit. Now with the screw sticking out you have something to grab with a vise grip. Shake the screw back and forth with the vise grips as you pull. I think the brass nipple should come out.

Re: Primer Nipples On Manifold

Thanks for the scoop- will give a try. The base of the nipple is intact so it is a matter of getting that thing to come loose. I plugged the hole with a tooth pick and have checked it two days in a row while the motor was running and didn't see any leaks- sprayed some WD40 around the toothpick since I'm sure there is vacuum and didn't notice any change to engine. So I'm off to the gulf with a toothpick in my motor. I remember my Spitfire had a couple of wood wedges for rear main seals so this should hold. Thanks to all who have replied. This is the most helpful site I have ever found. Cheers!

Re: Primer Nipples On Manifold

I plugged the hole left by the nipple breacking off with a toothpick. There were no leaks or performance issues noted- it ran well. I did ensure to plug the hose too.
I now have all the parts to include purchasing enough hose and extras tees and nipples just in case. My only hope now is I can remove the broken off nipple without taking the manifold off. I don't have the greatest access but if could have been worse.

Any tips before I tackle the Job?:)
