Hello all, first post here on iBoats after using the search feature and not finding anyone with my genuine situation.
Back story, 89 Evinrude 60hp attached to a 24ft Party Barge, floors, console seats, everything rotted away. It was my dad's boat, so I got it replaced the floors built a stand for the steering console attached a fishing seat and took it out. It ran good for the first 3 or 4 times out then that last time it was awful.
Took it to a boat mechanic, he said bad fuel pump, which of course it is a VRO. My dad told him he wanted to keep the VRO and asked him to repair it, I knew that it was very expensive.
The boat mechanic replaced the VRO with an old used regular pump. We of course are not very happy, but if it meant we could be back on the water then so be it. He also said in order to start the motor we had to now manually turn the primer solenoid. Ok, fine. So we paid him and left took boat out, major problems fuel leaks everywhere, even from the fuel pump housing. Ok so my dad took it back, he supposedly fixed it he said the problem was a bad primer solenoid. If he replaced it I can't tell I would say if he did it's used.
So next time we get ready to go out on the water I pop the cover prime it to check for fuel leaks, guess what they are all still there. I fixed the fuel leaks. Purchased a new regular fuel pump, and took it out.
I've now taken it out 3 more times and it's running good. Problem is I'm tired of almost falling in the water every time I need to start the motor. Used to with the VRO I could just push the key in that would choke the motor. I don't know how the mechanic disabled this but this is the one thing I'd love to fix. Through searching I've found out that apparently the hot wire is purple with a white stripe, I assume there are only two wires. Is it ok to wire it to a push button type toggle switch? Are there more wires?
If your wanting to know who the mechanic is so you can avoid them, it's a mom n pop type place on highway 70 in Connelly Springs NC near the carp pond.
