Hello all, first post here on iBoats after using the search feature and not finding anyone with my genuine situation.

Back story, 89 Evinrude 60hp attached to a 24ft Party Barge, floors, console seats, everything rotted away. It was my dad's boat, so I got it replaced the floors built a stand for the steering console attached a fishing seat and took it out. It ran good for the first 3 or 4 times out then that last time it was awful.

Took it to a boat mechanic, he said bad fuel pump, which of course it is a VRO. My dad told him he wanted to keep the VRO and asked him to repair it, I knew that it was very expensive.

The boat mechanic replaced the VRO with an old used regular pump. We of course are not very happy, but if it meant we could be back on the water then so be it. He also said in order to start the motor we had to now manually turn the primer solenoid. Ok, fine. So we paid him and left took boat out, major problems fuel leaks everywhere, even from the fuel pump housing. Ok so my dad took it back, he supposedly fixed it he said the problem was a bad primer solenoid. If he replaced it I can't tell I would say if he did it's used.

So next time we get ready to go out on the water I pop the cover prime it to check for fuel leaks, guess what they are all still there. I fixed the fuel leaks. Purchased a new regular fuel pump, and took it out.

I've now taken it out 3 more times and it's running good. Problem is I'm tired of almost falling in the water every time I need to start the motor. Used to with the VRO I could just push the key in that would choke the motor. I don't know how the mechanic disabled this but this is the one thing I'd love to fix. Through searching I've found out that apparently the hot wire is purple with a white stripe, I assume there are only two wires. Is it ok to wire it to a push button type toggle switch? Are there more wires?

If your wanting to know who the mechanic is so you can avoid them, it's a mom n pop type place on highway 70 in Connelly Springs NC near the carp pond.

I have no idea why he disconnected it unless he replaced it with one that does not work. Where did he disconnect it? Disconnect the line from the primer and energize it while pumping the fuel line bulb and you will be able to tell pretty quick if the primer is bad.

First things first ARKsoft, :welcome: to iboats. Very glad to have you aboard with us...

I am sorry you've had such problems with a suppose to be professional mechanic. However, I think you can see that YOU can do a lot of the repairs yourself now. I say buy the factory specific shop manual for your HP, Year, Model, Manufacturer manual and it will guide you through everything you ever wanted to know about your engine. It is the absolute best investment any boater can make. I also say you can buy all the parts (somewhere) for your engine to make it work like it was designed. Some parts may not be available through the boat parts places, but EBay and other sources certainly can help you find most any part you need. So get that shop manual, read it and see what is needed to make your engine run like it was suppose too... JMHO!

I don't know where it would be disconnected, I was assuming it that it was part of the wiring to the VRO. It only changed after it was removed.

Thanks! I will look into the shop manual, do you know where these can be found? I would like to one day make the tach, speedometer, and a few of the other gauges work (they never have since we purchased the boat.) The water pressure gauge is the only one that works.

Is it safe to say I can't wire the primer solenoid up to a push button?
