I posted a question on this forum last night entitled ?Choke Solenoid? and almost immediately got the answer I was looking for from Daviet who was kind enough to even provide a link to a diagram of the assembly I am having problems with. I now know that I need a Primer Solenoid Maintenance Valve, the access cap and an O-ring to correct the problem that I have (Parts # 50, 50A and 51 in the diagram located at http://www.ishopmarine.com/ishop/jsp...pCode=C0114899 ). I have two additional questions about the same issue. The problem with my maintenance valve is that it is snapped off flush with the housing that it goes into and gas is flowing from it into the engine housing and of course into the water and the motor well. My first question is this. Does this valve simply snap in place with the O-ring attached and is then held in place by the O-ring? There does not seem to be any type of screw or anything holding this valve in place. The valve is designed so that you can attach a can of engine tune up spray to it and run the engine with the can attached so I assume it is simply an empty tube held in place by the O-ring. Is this the case?

My other question is this. Snook season opened here this morning and I would like to get back on the water as soon as possible. It will be about three weeks at the earliest that I can get the parts delivered to fix this issue. I have tried to come up with any number of ways to engineer a temporary fix but I have not had any success. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can patch this thing up until the parts arrive, or bypass it completely? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Primer Solenoid

You can simply remove the line that feeds the primer and plug it off, that will fix your leaking problem. To get the motor started for the first time each day, you might have to put some premixed gas in a spray bottle, or something like that, and remove the hood and give it a spray into the air silencer to prime it. Or if it is like mine, just needs to crank a couple seconds longer to start in warm weather. If it is a "hard starter" you could rig up the hoses that go from the primer to the carbs so that they go to a syringe or something like that so you could inject a little premix to get it fired up. Just some ideas on how to rig it up in a pinch.

You also need part # 49. Have you checked with your local Evinrude dealer about parts availability? Not knowing your model but I believe you are talking about a late 90s V4 or V6.

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...vinrude&section=Fuel+Bracket+&+Components

It is a 1995 Model according to the model # (J90TLEOR). I have found the parts at several different sites online but the problem is that it takes 3 - 4 weeks to get parts here. The closest Evinrude dealer is probably somewhere in Cuba proper but I can't trade with them due to the US trage embargo and a couple hundred US Marines who have been told not to let anyone go past the fence line in either direction (even if it is Snook season, go figure!!!). Actually with the trade embargo there is probably not a dealer in Cuba either.

The good news is that I have plugged the supply line with a wood screw and the engine starts fine!!! It never gets below 70 degrees here and the water temp stays around 85 - 95 so I guess the engine is "warm" even though it hasn't been run. It actually seems to start quicker with the line plugged. I am still looking for used parts locally because I do not relish the thought of taking the cowling off the engine 5 miles offshore in 8' seas to manually prime the engine if it suddenly seems to need it.

I did find some installation information if anyone else is faced with replacing this valve. The following link is a .pdf file that explains the installation in detail.

Re: Primer Solenoid

Problem solved!!! Look out Snook LOL!!!

I found a guy here on the island with a parts motor and he GAVE me the valve, the o-ring, the cap and the cover for the solenoid! 5 minutes of work, put on the muffs, fired that puppy up and it runs like a TOP with 0 fuel leaks!!! Filled all three tanks up (can you say second mortgage???), put the boat in the water, and badda-bing badda-boom it runs like a brand new engine, boat jumps up on plane in about a length and a half and stays there at about 75% throttle and flies like the wind (if the wind was being pushed by a 16 year old Johnson 90 Horse that has been in a marine environment since leaving the factory).

Thanks to all of you. This site is amazing! I will be visiting often and will weigh in with my vast experience and knowledge. both of which when combined with $5.00 will get you a medium (grande???) coffee at Starbucks!
